Less Than Jake

On Wednesday, August 13th, Dallas’s iconic Studio at the Bomb Factory erupted into a kaleidoscope of ska-punk grandeur as Less Than Jake’s  Summer Circus Tour rolled into town.

The evening began with Catbite, whose powerhouse vocals and fiery stage presence, particularly from Brittany Luna, immediately won the crowd’s heart and ignited the dance floor. The Suicide Machines followed, delivering a high-octane set that felt like musical dynamite…gritty, fast, and punctuated by one of the night’s most raucous sing-alongs.

Fishbone then stormed the stage, a genre-defying powerhouse since 1979 whose legacy weaves together ska, punk, funk, and soul. Rejuvenated with a refreshed lineup anchored by founding members Angelo Moore and keyboardist/vocalist Christopher Dowd, they performed with their signature genre-bending ferocity.

This past June, Fishbone released Stockholm Syndrome, their first full-length studio album in nearly two decades, which channels righteous fury and sharp social critique with a swirl of funk, punk, and soul. Their Dallas set mirrored that intensity. Bursting out with “Party at Ground Zero” and tearing through “Subliminal Fascism,” “I Don’t Care,” and “Skankin’ to the Beat,” they delivered their trademark mix of political punch and playful absurdity.

The second half of their set leaned into unpredictability with “Gelato the Clown,” the biting “Lyin’ Ass Bitch,” “Cubicle,” and the ferocious closer “Racist Piece of Shit.” With horns blazing and frontman Angelo Moore crowd-surfing mid-song, Fishbone embodied delightful pandemonium, an explosion of sound and spectacle that reminded everyone why they remain one of ska’s most influential forces.

When Less Than Jake finally emerged, they cranked the energy even higher, opening with “Gainesville Rock City” and tearing through a set that perfectly balanced nostalgic fan-favorites with newer material.

Less Than Jake have been pillars of the third-wave ska-punk movement since the mid-1990s. In November 2024, they released Uncharted, a brand-new seven-song EP produced by Bill Stevenson of the Descendents…bold, fresh, and brimming with horn-powered punch. That EP, with tracks like “Sunny Side,” “Brand New Day,” and “Walking Pipebomb,” marked a confident new chapter for the band.

Drawing on both their classic catalog and new material, Less Than Jake opened with “Gainesville Rock City” before tearing through staples like “Lie to Me,” “Johnny Quest Thinks We’re Sellouts,” “Walking Pipebomb,” “Automatic,” and the ever-beloved anthem “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads.” Mid-set gems from Uncharted, “Brand New Day,” “Sunny Side,” and the emotive “The Science of Selling Yourself Short,” gave the evening emotional weight, while a cheeky cover of the Animaniacs theme brought playful levity. Their finale, with the encore including “Last One Out of Liberty City,” “Help Save the Youth of America From Exploding,” and “Look What Happened,” left the crowd in euphoric celebration.

From Catbite’s fresh fire to The Suicide Machines’ raw momentum, and from Fishbone’s fiery return, to Less Than Jake’s infectious energy, the Summer Circus delivered more than a concert: it offered an immersive, brass-soaked party of unity and unfiltered passion. The crowd skanked, sang, and shared in the chaos with gleeful abandon. Dallas didn’t just witness a show. It became a transient home for ska-punk’s unruly, undying spirit, and fans left sweaty, smiling, and still humming those brass-soaked choruses way after the house lights came up.
