On Thursday, August 7th, San Antonio’s Boeing Center at Tech Port hosted the Alternative Hard Rock giants, Chevelle, for a night of raw nerves. Launching the first night of the tour with Asking Alexandria, this was a chance for Central Texas Metalheads to vent their raw nerves with true trailblazers of the genre.

In the direct support slot, British Metalcore veterans Asking Alexandria took the stage in San Antonio to show the crowd they can hold their own with the most seasoned of the pack.
The backlights outlined the silhouettes of the musicians as they set up the intro for “Things Could Be Different,” watching the spotlights snap to life when singer Danny Worsnop stormed the stage. So, let’s get this out of the way now. Worsnop did not wear the Michelin Man’s skin; he took the stage and sang without any backing tracks, and all other vocals seemed to be handled by the touring guitarist.

Asking Alexandria’s set had plenty of hiccups. After two songs, Worsnop admitted that his in-ear monitor was malfunctioning, making the act of hitting a high note for him much of an exercise of trial and error. Adding insult to injury, his backup vocalist was not mixed properly, leaving him almost muted when it came time to deliver critical parts of songs, like “Alone In A Room.” This feels like growing pains for the start of the tour.
Aside from that, any stumbles were not held personally by the fans. The audience was singing along all the way to the back row, and the General Admission pit saw crowd-surfing throughout the songs “Where Did It Go” and “Into The Fire”.
An acoustic performance of “Someone, Somewhere” had an audience singing in unison, and seamlessly led into another older fan favorite, “Moving On.”

Say whatever you will about the recent controversies, but this band still has the chops to capture fans’ imaginations. Their style has significantly evolved, but cherry-picking several of the older songs and adapting them does make them fit in with the new vision of Asking Alexandria. And yes, they closed their set on aptly named, “The Final Episode.” No backing tracks, they relied heavily on the backup vocalist for the growls and screams while Danny carried the rest of the song with his more prevalent Country-tinged vocal range. But by the final note, the crowd was electric and ready for the headliner.

With one more drop of the house lights, it was Chevelle’s turn at the center spotlight to deliver an absolutely punishing open in the form of “Family System.” The stage setup held a wall of LED screens split into segments that were able to spin and amplify the otherworldly atmosphere with a series of strategically placed mirrors. All of this kind of covers for the fact that you are watching three guys equally spaced who rarely stray from the microphones (I suppose the drummer gets a pass on this).
With a career spanning well over two decades, their set represents the perfection of a Venomous sound. Not that the eras of Chevelle are particularly well defined, but parsing out the more recent songs finds a level of songs that are both rhythmic and experimental. Songs like “Self Destructor,” “Face To The Floor,” or “Joyride” don’t exactly cross over into Prog, but it does feel like an elevated representation of their Garage roots.

Special note must be made of the new songs off their new album, Bright As Blasphemy, which made their live debut at this very show, such as “Rabit Hole” and “Jim Jones.” Aside from being some of the best riffs of the band’s career, they may make the new album a contender for one of the strongest of the year!

Still, the highlights of the evening were the triad of classic favorites: “Send The Pain Below,” “Comfortable Liar,” and “The Red,” in which singer Pete Loeffler performed 2/3rds of the haunting song on his own before being rejoined by the rest of the band.

After more than an hour of heavy-hitting anthems, Chevelle wrapped the night with a surprise closer, “Mars Simula,” sending San Antonio fans home cheering!
The trek hits its final stop on October 2nd in Airway Heights, WA. Check out the tour flyer below for all the dates, because this is a ride you don’t want to miss.
