The L.A. Exes and OK Go took to the stage at Dallas’ “Best Indoor Music Venue” (Dallas Observer, 2024) and gave the crowd a show that spanned almost 30 years, and included sounds of the 1960s pop genre with a twist.  When all was said and done, the floor was nowhere to be found.

The L.A. Exes, an indie queer alt-rock pop quartet, opened the night wearing their signature matched threads: black and white vertical-striped suits, set off by red guitars and all-black Meta Ray-Ban sunglasses, which they used to record the show from the band’s perspective.

The fans who came early, of which there were plenty, were treated to the band’s chill energy and groovy sounds reminiscent of the 1960s pop genre made famous by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and countless others.  Songs so easy to sing along with, you could feel the connection between the band and fans.  The band’s set featured their newest single, “Love Bomb,” along with a stirring rendition of the Cranberries’ hit, “Linger,” to round it out.

OK Go was next, along with what was described as a “fuck ton” of confetti, biodegradable and recyclable, of course.  The official conversion from “fuck ton” to imperial units is 150 pounds, according to OK Go’s lead singer Damian Kulash.  From what seemed like the downbeat of the first song, an unending barrage of multi-colored party paper filled the venue and covered anything it could find.  Kulash, within seconds, had hopped off the stage and onto the railing separating the stage from the fans and engaged in a sing-along of the opening song in the set, “This Too Shall Pass.”

Touring in support of their first studio album in over 10 years, And the Adjacent Possible, the almost two-hour long show spanned the band’s entire catalog and featured the previously mentioned confetti, acoustic solo of “This is How it Ends,” from within the crowd, a show and tell session, a handbell rendition of “Shooting the Moon” (with gloves on this time), along with several Q&A’s throughout the night. For the uninitiated, it was a primer on the band and what they were about, and for the initiated, it was a reminder of why they were fans of the band to begin with.

Throughout the set, Kulash engaged with the fans in several Q&A sessions along with a brief show and tell of the new album featuring a colorful pop-up insert.  Those in attendance learned about the sound guy, Jeremy, the amount of confetti used during the show, and Kulash’s 2023 movie, “The Beanie Bubble,” about the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s.  The fans gained insight into a few of the band’s favorite things, including their favorite song to perform, “Better Than This,” along with their favorite music video to film, which was “White Knuckles,” because who wouldn’t like to play with dogs for two weeks?  They learned that Kulash and bassist Tim Nordwind met at summer camp when they were 11 and also learned of the band’s other favorite artists, including The Pixies, Prince, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles.

In the end, to close out the show, fans were treated to the song the band is probably best known for, “Here It Goes Again,” and then three encores, starting with a cover of The La’s “There She Goes.”  Rounding out the night was the most played track from the new album, “A Stone Only Rolls Downhill,” and then “The One Moment.”  As the fans waded their way through the ankle-deep confetti after the show, smiles and hoarse voices proved it had been a night well spent.
