We asked the Atlanta-based darkwave band Now After Nothing what they’ve been listening to lately. Check out what’s on their current rotation on this Spotify playlist curated by them for Music Fiends!
Now After Nothing is carving out a unique niche in the Atlanta music scene, drawing listeners in with their captivating blend of alternative influences and modern electronic soundscapes. Frontman Matt Spatial, a multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for innovation, channels the evocative essence of bands like Bauhaus and The Cure while incorporating the lush sonic textures reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth.
The band’s music serves as a canvas for exploring intricate social, political, and personal narratives, echoing the sentiments of those who often feel lost in today’s world. This depth adds an alluring darkness to their sound, striking a chord with fans seeking connection and resonance.
Their energetic live performances have garnered attention in Atlanta’s vibrant music scene, with the band sharing stages alongside notable artists like Curse Mackey—known for his work with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and Pigface—and rising darkwave stars Astari Nite. Now After Nothing is not just a band; they are a force of expression that captures the tumult of modernity through artful, layered compositions. As they continue to evolve, they invite their audience to lose themselves in their haunting melodies.
Now After Nothing’s debut EP Artificial Ambivalence, dropped September 13 on the band’s own label Living On Neptune(s) and is available on all digital platforms and vinyl.
Artificial Ambivalence was written and performed by Spatial along with drummer Michael Allen, plus features additional guitar work by Mark Gemini Thwaite, who has played with Peter Murphy, The Mission, and Gary Numan.
Now After Nothing proudly supports Atlanta’s LifeLine Animal Project, which is a non-profit organization that runs animal shelters for the two main Atlanta counties. Their mission is to end shelter euthanasia. The band sells a ‘Meow After Nothing’ cat design T-shirt at shows and online, with a portion of the proceeds going towards the organization.
Watch Now After Nothing’s new video for “Criminal Feature” below:
The song is about the enmeshment of politics and religion and a commentary on the “Damn, the separation of Church and State” mentality in this country. Matt Spatial explains: “I’m not anti-religion per se but I am very anti-abuse of religion, abuse of politics, or abuse of anything for that matter, when it’s (mis)used to manipulate, and/or harm others for some sort of personal gain as its end goal.”
