Former Black Flag/dos Bassist KIRA ROESSLER & Her Trio of Pups

On her self-titled debut album, punk and hardcore legend Kira (aka Kira Roessler) brings quiet restraint to its angular dark minimalism – thanks to not one, but three pups. Jim, Stinky, and Hank are a handful, even for the legendary bassist of Black Flag, dos, Geza X, and Waxx.

“Jim is the elder statesman… sweet, quite playful at times, a bit on the deaf side, very much a chow hound  (including carrots, pumpkin, treats, watermelon, cantaloupe). He has just an amazing temperament.”

“Madison, who we call Stinky…Sweetest girl, loves sleeping under the covers during the day. Also loves getting stinky.”

“Hank – the problem middle child. The only one who has drawn blood from both of us multiple times. He’s been to boot camp twice. He has mellowed with age – but it’s best to make sure he’s doing okay before you make contact.”

Alongside her well-known contributions to the mid-80s iteration of Black Flag, among other groundbreaking hardcore acts, Kira’s distinguished, epic career in entertainment includes two Emmys and an Oscar. “I have been part of the sound teams for many projects I am proud of,” she notes. “Mad Max: Fury Road, Joker, A Star is Born (2018), and Game of Thrones Season 2 to name a few.” Content to wear many hats, she places it all in a very particular order. “Bass player first and foremost – this is just who I am.” With a smile, she adds “then a sound editor, dog mom, loving wife, and loner.”

It’s from that diversity and solitude, perhaps, that Kira mapped the ethereal yet authoritative landscape of her new album with a simple goal. “Express my inner essence and hope that others might feel a bit of their own by listening.“ After creating most of the music alone in her room, Kira solicits what she calls “tasty additions” and “virtual musical bits” from the people closest to her, including her brother, the equally prolific Paul Roessler, who produced the album, which dropped 10/19 on Kitten Robot.
