Electro-Funk Master Nick Vivid Goes Under The Probe

Multi-instrumentalist and pop-maximalist Nick Vivid’s brand of retro-futuristic electro-funk is no doubt a testament to his upbringing. Growing up in Buffalo, NY with a Disc Jockey for a father and a glam-rock-loving mother, Vivid was exposed to the top shelf of 20th-century rock and soul from a tender age.

Now residing in New York City, Vivid reflects these influences through the warm filter of a ‘70s cosmopolitan rockstar. His new synth-heavy psychedelica single, “I Wanna Reign Again,” just dropped, his fourth LP, No More Secrets, is out November 12th (via MegaPlatinum Records), and his record release party is slated for November 13th at All Night Skate in Brooklyn.

“It’s a song about just wanting to feel alive,” Vivid says of his latest track. “I get all of the frustration out there. I feel for people who don’t have the patience or tolerance. I barely have it myself sometimes, but I try to balance that out with some faith that everything is going to work out for the best eventually if I get out of my own way and let things happen. That’s where the line ‘Help me get out of the way’ comes from – to stop trying so hard.”

These are busy times for Nick, but he graciously accepted our offer of going under The Probe:

1) If a roach crashed your rehearsal space, would you run or would you kill it?

IF?!!? This is NYC. If it doesn’t happen to you, you’re lying about living here. I definitely kill them, but they tend to attack me first. When they realize they crashed *my* place, it’s like they are preparing for war.

2) Does anyone in the band like to play practical jokes? If so, what’s one of the all-time best ones?

As a solo artist, playing tricks on myself is something I try to do less of these days!

3) What’s the last gift you received?

Amy Chace, a fantastic visual artist, just sent me some drawings to use. She’ll do that occasionally. She’s very generous with her talent. Back in 2017, she did the cover art for my second album, Nicksploitation. I never asked for it. One day, out of the blue, I got an email from her saying “Here, I made this for you.” and I was like “This is an album cover!” I was knocked out. I bought the original from her and now it’s in a frame on my wall.

4) If you could pick one thing about yourself that you’d like your fans to know, what would it be?

That I’m grateful for them and that they will always get the best I have to give.

5) What music are you listening to lately? I’ve been on a late 70’s post-punk no-wave kick lately.

Bands like Suicide and Pylon have been inspiring some of my recent writing. Those bands had such a refreshing sound based on the simplest of ideas, executed perfectly.
