Romy Hoffman of AGENDER Goes Under the PROBE!

Australian songwriter and musician Romy Hoffman of self-proclaimed “SCHIZO SYNTHY PARANOID POST-PUNK WITH A DASH OF DYSMORPHIC DESIRE ⚡️🖤” band AGENDER is delivering some of the coolest straight-edge femme punk music to date.

Although AGENDER was founded by Hoffman in 2011 as a solo act born out of newfound sobriety, the band morphed into an intensive quartet over the course of 10 years, consisting of bassist Cristy Michel, drummer Christy Greenwood, and synth player Sara Rivas rounding out the band, with Hoffman as frontwoman.

The LA-based band is gearing up to unleash their sophomore album, No Nostalgia, on February 24, 2022. The tracks “Preach,” “Astro Tarot,” and “No Nostalgia” are out now.

Hoffman had this to say about the title track song “No Nostalgia” – “The song imagines a world devoid of memory, where nothing exists anymore- the dust of semiotics and signs are what remains. There are no memoirs because there are no people. It’s a yearning for amnesia. Human beings are usually either looking back at the past or are worrying about the future. The oscillation between these tenses is what creates anxiety. No Nostalgia is a peaceful place of no anxiety, of evaporated earth and emptiness, of erased arousal, of no desire. There is no more danger because nothing exists. The song doesn’t say what caused this, but it’s post-human Earth about to rejuvenate itself from the vestiges and damages of Human existence.”

Romy was lovely enough to go under the probe with Music Fiends! Check out her responses and watch the video for “No Nostalgia” below.

1) If a roach crashed your rehearsal space, would you run or would you kill it?
Neither. I’d try and woo it into a bottle and take it outside! That said, my magical thinking usually gets me through such occurrences, and I’m generally good at coexisting with bugs!

2) Does anyone in the band like to play practical jokes? If so, what’s one of the all-time best ones?
I like to make up jokes! I’m probably one of the best pun makers in the world. Linguistic jokes over practical jokes. My band consists of two Virgos and two Cancers, so we’re quite the serious types!

3) What’s the last gift you received?
It was my birthday recently. I was given a copy of E.M. Cioran’s ‘The Trouble With Being Born’.

4) If you could pick one thing about yourself that you’d like your fans to know, what would it be?
I do a drawing a day. They’re great. Check them out: drawnbyromy.com I love rituals, routines and (self-imposed) rules! But I also love breaking rules.

5) What music are you listening to lately?
A lot of Japanese ambient music from the 80’s & 90’s. Also, ‘He Said’, which is Graham Lewis’ from the band ‘Wire’s side project from the 80’s. In fact, all of the Wire members’ solo/side projects from that era- Dome and Colin Newman’s solo albums. Also, Aurat, who are a local L.A band. And, I’m listening to Alice Coltrane right this very minute.
