Sapphire Jewell and Anna Arboles of GYPSUM Go Under The PROBE!

Los Angeles-based post-rock band GYPSUM is a fresh group taking their own lead in the industry. If you’re a fan of bands like METRIC or Tigers Jaw, you’ll find that same eclectic vibe in GYPSUM. Rhythmic drums and spicy guitar riffs are showcased in each of their songs with ease. Their melodies are far from lacking intricacy; GYPSUM as a unit just *gets* harmony amongst instruments. Having exclaimed their founding came out of “a weekly jam session” it’s apparent they stick to their independent roots in their music video, “Give It.”

Gypsum’s self-titled record dropped October 12 via Sonic Ritual.

GYPSUM vocalists and guitarists Sapphire Jewell and Anna Arboles were lovely enough to go under The PROBE and answer some questions for us. You can read on below!
1) If a roach crashed your rehearsal space, would you run or would you kill it?

Sapphire: I think we’d all be upset by it but since we have so little time in our busy lives for Gypsum and rehearsals right now, I think we’d force ourselves to keep practicing and being productive. We’d all definitely want to vacate the room but I think we’d just have to keep going hahah.

2) Does anyone in the band like to play practical jokes? If so, what’s one of the all-time best ones?

Anna: We’re not really ones for practical jokes…poop jokes are about the only thing we can agree upon. We’re super sophisticated like that. We do have a long-running gag about doing parody versions of all our songs…that Jessy will then perform at a cabaret. It mostly involves changing the lyrics to be potty humor and incorporating toilet flush samples. Again, super sophisticated…but universal.

3) What’s the last gift you received?

Anna: I recently bought myself new sheets so that has been a nice gift to myself.

4) What music are you listening to lately?

Anna: I like to listen to the Betty (show on HBO) soundtrack playlists on Spotify and go for long walks. I love that show. I go through periods where I am really invested in seeking out and exploring new music but I just don’t think I’m in that space right now.
