Slinky Vagabond, the passion project of guitarist/producer Fabio Fabbri and Keanan Duffty (known for his fashion work with Sex Pistols and David Bowie), has featured a stellar cast of rotating musicians on their studio albums over the years. With collaborations from the likes of Midge Ure (Ultravox/Visage/Live Aid co-founder), Richard Fortus (Guns N’ Roses/Psychedelic Furs), and Tony Bowers (Durutti Column/Simply Red)—just to name a few—Slinky Vagabond’s most recent album, King Boy Vandals, becomes a showcase of veteran punk and hard-rock talent. “It sounds like all the players that perform on it,” Duffty says.
Initial recordings for the album were completed prior to March of 2020, and Duffty and Fabbri used the time during lockdown to recruit the additional talent that appears on King Boy Vandals. The beauty of such a menagerie of talent is the spirit of camaraderie that permeates every track. Already ripe with the musical and lyrical ideas of Duffty and Fabbri, each song blossoms when collaborators bring their own unique touch to it. The melancholy song “I’m Falling Down” soars with the haunting keys of Dave Formula (Magazine/Visage), Fortus plays an absolutely ripping solo on “Fear No Evil;” and the tracks “Old Boy” and “Prima Donna” both feature the killer combination of Bowers and Ure.
With Slinky Vagabond primarily being a collaborative, home-studio project, we felt it was particularly fitting to ask Duffty and Fabbri, “Who’s Your Little Friend?”
Keanan Duffty – My cat Ginger Baker was found when he was a seven-week-old on the streets of New York by my wife, Nancy Garcia. We already had two other cats, Ziggy and Twiggy, and thought that we would foster Ginger until he found a permanent home. But that was seven years ago! Ginger is a music fiend but unlike his name-sake, he prefers guitars to drums.
Fabio Fabbri – This is Tigro, a real rocker, who is estimating if the riff is quite cool
