Straight off of last month’s Australian tour, Hermosa Beach-based One Square Mile has been creating quite a bit of punk rock buzz since dropping their third official release, the Source of Suffering EP, following the release of their debut EP, Kickin’ Rocks (2017) and full album The System (2018).
The Hermosa Beach/South Bay Area has always had a wild and thriving punk rock scene and has birthed many iconic punk and hardcore bands such as the Descendents, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, All, and Pennywise. Fitting then that 1SM has named itself after the one-square-mile parcel of land that comprises Hermosa Beach.
Formed in 2017, 1SM pounded the pavement hard last year, tallying nearly 50 gigs total, as they hit stages all over SoCal. Most notably, they opened for The Cunts and OFF!, and their final show of the year was in December with Agent Orange at Saint Rocke.
Their Source of Suffering EP was produced by Grammy award-winning producer Cameron Webb, who tends to emphasize heavier music and has produced for a variety of bands, including Danzig, NOFX, Godsmack, Pennywise, Alkaline Trio, and Motörhead. It was recorded at Webb’s own Maple Sound Studios in Santa Ana, CA. The resulting sound showcases their hardcore-punk style, just infused with more musicality while still remaining true to their area’s rich punk roots.
