Minneapolis indie-punk sibling trio Loki’s Folly unleash their searing new single “Retribution” today via Kitten Robot Records, marking another bold step forward in their evolving sound. Following September’s “King of All Alone,” the track plunges into the tangled space where anger, fear, and the longing for connection collide. Annie (24), Nissa (19), and Oskar (15) bring that emotional tension to life with their trademark mix of raw honesty, punchy hooks, and melodic grit. As Annie explains:
“Retribution’ looks at the parallels of extreme sides of emotions – wanting to hurt those who hurt you, but also just wanting not to be alone forever.”
Produced by Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum, the song builds on the foundation of their debut album Sisu, but with a darker undercurrent and an even sharper emotional edge. It’s a cathartic anthem for anyone trying not to be overtaken by their own frustration.
Guitarist and vocalist Annie Kuchenmeister expands on the duality at the core of the track: “‘Retribution’ is a song looking at the parallels of extreme sides of emotions and how we react to difficult things,” she says. “The verses are an exploration of defensive and protective anger – wanting to hurt those who hurt you. While there’s gratification and justification to seeking retribution, the chorus creates a vulnerable opposition to these harsher feelings. It’s really about just not wanting to be alone forever and wanting to be cared for after being hurt.”

That balance of harshness and hope fuels the band’s trademark sound: kinetic guitars, cathartic rhythms, and unfiltered honesty.
“Retribution” arrives shortly after their September single “King of All Alone,” a track whose early spark came from the band experimenting with an ABBA-inspired chord progression during a cover they were working on. What started as a casual creative exercise grew into a meditation on isolation, perseverance, and clinging to hope during moments of uncertainty. The song captured that lingering sense…familiar to many….from the pandemic era: waiting for something good to break through and trying to hold onto optimism in an increasingly unstable world.

Together, “King of All Alone” and “Retribution,” both produced by Ryan Smith, form a powerful emotional pairing. One reflects longing and cautious hope, while the other confronts anger and vulnerability head-on, showing a band unafraid to face both the chaos and catharsis of their own inner worlds.
Since the release of their 2023 debut album Sisu, Loki’s Folly have carved out a reputation as one of the Midwest’s most exciting young bands. Formed in South Minneapolis by sisters Annie and Nissa, and later joined by their younger brother Oskar, the trio’s creative chemistry gives their music an intensity and immediacy that’s impossible to manufacture. Their debut saw them collaborating with celebrated producers like Ryan Smith (of Soul Asylum), Ed Ackerson (The Replacements, The Jayhawks), Kevin Bowe (Etta James, Jonny Lang), and John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew W.K.), exploring themes of identity, neurodivergence, and the turbulent process of self-discovery.
While Sisu showcased their youthful defiance and eclectic energy, “Retribution” reveals a band stepping into deeper emotional territory. It’s a track that acknowledges the sting of anger while still reaching for connection…an honest, resonant next chapter from a group growing bolder and more self-aware with every release.
