Hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Nothing More came into existence. 20 years!!! Where does the time fly???
From my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, this band has spent much of the last two decades building their base the old-fashioned way: one show at a time, one song at a time, one fan at a time. I know you may be asking, “But Kris… doesn’t every band do it that way???”. No, actually they don’t. In the 30-Second Soundbite, SoundCloud-driven world we live in where access to music is as easy as hitting “next” on Spotify, Pandora, YT Music, etc., bands come and go faster than a Texas winter. But every now and then, a gem comes along with the strength of belief in their music and the staying power to keep putting one foot in front of another until BANG…. three Grammy nominations, chart-topping hits, and tours spanning the globe several times over.
Lead by the band’s original drummer turned frontman and lead vocalist, Jonny Hawkins, guitarist Mark Vollelunga, and bassist Daniel Oliver, Nothing More released their fourth studio album in 2014 self-titled Nothing More, which yielded multiple hits including “This is the Time (Ballast)” which rocketed to number 1 on the Mediabase Active Rock chart and number 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The album also included “Mr. MTV”, “Jenny” and “Here’s to the Heartache” all charting in the top 15 of both charts. It took more than a decade for these guys to get the recognition so richly deserved, which only proves there truly is no substitute for belief, hard work, and perseverance.
If you’ve never experienced a Nothing More show, be prepared for exactly that… A SHOW!!! A tsunami of sound, lights, effects, and percussion. As described by Jonny himself, he compares it to “some sort of twisted, rock ‘n roll adaptation of Blue Man Group if Blue Man Group ever opened for Rage Against the Machine.” Historically, the stage setup includes two separate drum sets, one for the band’s main drummer Ben Anderson, and one for Hawkins who intermittently adds a percussive flair to the performance.
