When Peter Capaldi wrote and recorded the song “If I Could Pray” with his buddies in the collective Monks Road Social for their 2020 album Humanism, he didn’t think it would open him up to putting out an album of his own.
As a matter of fact, it could be argued that it wasn’t meant to. Peter’s primarily known as an actor but he’s also a more competent guitar player than he’d ever admit to being. He’s always been happy to fiddle with a fan’s guitar during a panel at a con appearance or lend his vocals to a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes” at the end of an interview, but an album of him singing songs he’d written was probably a grandiose consideration. Laughable even.
If 2020 did nothing else, it gave us all a hell of a lot of time to think and rethink some things, and now it’s Peter that gets to laugh as he does press for his debut album, St. Christopher, due out in November. Recently, he debuted the title track and spoke with Chris Hawkins at BBC Radio 6 Music about the inspiration behind it.
Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers and children, and according to Peter, in the 1960s, the Vatican decided he wasn’t real. But much like Pluto’s unfair demotion, it didn’t really have an affect on how the people received him. There’s more to all of that, I’m sure. I’ll look it up before I review the album but as of right now, I trust everything he told Chris. He is The Doctor after all.
Below, you can listen to the dreamy and melodic track “St. Christopher.” The album is scheduled for a November 19th release on Monks Road Records. It is available for pre-order through Band Camp.
