Try saying Tenacious D without laughing; go ahead.. try it. Can’t do it, can you? I mean, how do you not giggle just by saying the band’s name? Where it seems like every movie star these days wants to be a rock star, I truly believe these two knuckleheads (comprised of duo Jack Black and Kyle Gass) never ever had any intention of being anything but slapstick.
Yet 30 years later, with a massive legion of followers, including me, Tenacious D is as big of a rock star as any musical act on the planet. Rarely taken seriously as “real” musicians, critics and naysayers have said for years that it’s Jack Black’s fame that brought all the success to the music. Well, Johnny Depp is arguably more famous than Jack Black; off the top of your head, can you name the band Mr. Depp fronts?
Maybe you can, but here’s the point: Beyond the humor, musically Tenacious D is good… really REALLY good and they have the hardware to prove it: a Grammy for best Metal Performance in 2015 beating out… oh my goodness…Anthrax, Motorhead, Mastodon, and Slipknot. THAT’S Tenacious D.
