Watch Drakulas’ music video for the single, “Dark Black”

Watch Drakulas’ music video for the single, “Dark Black,” and try to convince me that the Austin, Texas art-rock ensemble is not the result of computer wizardry. Imagine uploading ’79 styled new-wave – equal parts The Nerves and The Weirdos – into a computer, setting the dial to ‘goth’ and letting the resulting artificial intelligence air dry in the Texas heat. That is Drakulas. Read: This band is perfect.

How could you go wrong with a roster featuring members of Gwar, Rise Against, and Riverboat Gamblers? Especially when bringing Stuart Sikes, producer of The White Stripes and Rocket From The Crypt, into the booth.

“Dark Black” is Drakulas’ latest release off Terminal Amusements, out now on Dine Alone Records. Simply put, if you have a copy of We Got The Neutron Bomb on your bookshelf, you have to buy this record. The riffs are slinky and shaky-handed, the snare drum hits like a smack across the face, and the vocals have a half-spoken/half-wailed quality that begs the crowd to pogo in a sweaty barroom.

Drakulas frontman Mike Wiebe explains the backdrop of Terminal Amusements as a fictionalized New York City. “I’d never been to New York,” says Wiebe, “so my perception of the place was influenced by everything from ‘The Warriors’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ to the opening credits of ‘Welcome Back, Kotter.’” It’s a perfectly amalgamized backdrop that Drakulas use to frame their new-wave nostalgia. The resulting sound captures punk right before The Decline of Western Civilization era and is just as invigorating now.
