As a first-timer at Milwaukee Metal Fest, I had no idea what to expect. Sure, I’d heard stories (legends really) about the sheer chaos, the intensity, and the unrivaled community of metalheads. But nothing could’ve fully prepared me for the experience of stepping into what can only be described as the epicenter of chaos and calamity. With bands ranging from new and underground all the way to established and iconic, the anticipation was palpable.

The venue itself was nothing short of amazing. The Rave/Eagles Club, with its rich history and intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for a metal festival. The multi-day event utilized a variety of different-sized stages, offering a dynamic experience that kept the energy high throughout the weekend. Food from local food trucks remained parked in a courtyard for a quick refuel between sets.

Merch was more than just a shopping opportunity – it was an experience. An entire basement dedicated to merchandise. Rows of vendors offered everything from vintage patches to exclusive festival prints and rare vinyl. A long wall was dedicated to a massive amount of concert tees, with inventory changing every day. Booths were also spread out throughout the rest of the venue – an obscene amount of patches, tattoo artists offering walk-ins, and bars were around every corner.

The lineup was massive and varied – death metal, thrash, doom, metalcore, and everything between. The diverse lineup spanned the full spectrum of metal, delivering unforgettable performances across its three-day run.

Down‘s rare Midwest appearance featured a powerhouse lineup with Phil Anselmo, Kirk Windstein, Pepper Keenan, Jimmy Bower, and Pat Bruders, delivering a set that was both heavy and soulful. Their slow-burning anthems like “Lifer” and “Ghosts Along the Mississippi” echoed through the venue with swampy intensity, reminding everyone why they remain legends of Southern sludge.

Black Label Society brought their signature blend of groove-heavy riffs and biker-metal swagger, with Zakk Wylde’s shredding solos and larger-than-life presence captivating the crowd. Their set was a thunderous display of Southern-infused heavy metal that had fists pumping and heads banging from wall to wall.

GWAR‘s 40th-anniversary set was a theatrical spectacle, complete with their signature blend of gore and humor. The band drenched the crowd in fake blood and intergalactic absurdity, turning their performance into a wild, immersive experience that was as much performance art as it was metal mayhem.
