Tonight’s gig is Peter Hook and the Light, and I’ve been looking forward to it for ages. I arrived early so doors had yet to open and my photo credentials hadn’t arrived. I took the opportunity the wait time gave me to check out the mass of people passing through security and packing themselves tightly into the line on the stairs to get in. Families and a wide variety of age groups were present, with the youngest person I noticed being around 8 years old. Peter Hook’s music is timeless, so it appeals to multiple different age groups and generations.
Originally known for his roles in the legendary bands Joy Division and later New Order, Hook is currently on tour playing both the New Order and the Joy Division Substance albums in their entirety.
There is no supporting artist on this tour and the band plays for close to 3 hours, an impressive feat for anyone, much less man in his late 60’s. At promptly 8 pm the lights fade, the crowd’s anticipation builds…and it’s showtime.
The band members take their places as Hooky saunters onstage, his bass hanging low as usual, and they launch into New Order’s “Dreams Never End,” and we’re off. The first half of the show is New Order material, followed by the Joy Division tracks after a brief intermission.
The 30-song set that followed was nothing short of a nostalgic look down memory lane, as these songs were part of the soundtrack of my youth.
When your material consists of the greatest hits of two iconic bands like New Order and Joy Division, it’s almost impossible to put on anything other than a stellar show. The band was tight and Hook’s voice sounded amazing. The packed venue cheered and sang in unison at all the right spots.
He ended the night on a high with “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” arguably the most well-known Joy Division tune.
Peter Hook is keeping the music he created with both New Order and Joy Division alive through these live shows with The Light, and is giving younger generations a chance to experience what the hype is all about firsthand. I like it.
