Morrissey performed last night, November 2nd, to a sold-out crowd at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, TX. His 14-date tour began Halloween night in Houston and we are just the second stop on the trek, which wraps November 23rd in Waukegan, IL.

Upon arrival, the merch lines were insanely long, and a PETA booth was set up in the lobby.

At precisely 8:30, the lobby doors were shut and an announcement overhead signaled the start of the show. For the next 40 minutes, we were treated to an entertaining selection of video clips that were basically a history lesson in rock n’ roll and featured performance footage from a few of my favorites – The Ramones, The Runaways, and Bowie – among many others.

At about 9:10 Morrissey took to the stage with his band, they formed a line, bowed to the crowd, and were off with “You’re the One for Me, Fatty,” the Mick Ronson produced track off of 1992’s Your Arsenal, followed by “Alma Matters” from 1997’s Maladjusted. Morrissey repeatedly threw his tambourine high into the air and caught it, and ferociously whipped his mic cord around. Even at 65 years old, he’s still got it. His voice was on point and sounded amazing, and the backing band was tight.

“I’m your last really, really bad habit….It’s true,” Morrissey told the audience before launching into fan favorite, “Shoplifters of the World Unite.” Perhaps that is true. I know I wasn’t alone in wondering if he would actually perform tonight. He is legendary for walking off stage mid-performance or, even worse, not performing at all. Yet people still travel great distances to see him…like a bad habit. There was a group who flew in from Manchester, someone from Canada, and another I met who came in from Missouri.

Morrissey, who was dressed in a suit and sported a Morrissey shirt underneath his coat, told the crowd, “I love this country with every ounce of my being. But if I ever see daytime television…” Cheers erupted from the audience and grew in intensity when the opening guitar riff to “How Soon is Now?” was played. The floors vibrated and the air buzzed with excitement as practically everyone in attendance sang along to, arguably, his most famous track.

During the 9th song of the night, “Speedway,” a fan jumped onstage and serenaded Morrissey, who acknowledged the fan by bowing and singing back to him before a large stage bouncer pushed the fan off stage. I was hoping this wasn’t going to be an invitation for other fans to do the same because although Morrissey seemed like he was in a fantastic mood, we all know that can change at any minute and the show could abruptly end without warning.

“I wanted to tell you something dramatic about the next song, if you can bare it….The world is full of crashing bores,” Morrissey told us before diving into the track of the same name off of You Are the Quarry. On the screen behind him, clips of Dr. Fauci, made famous during the dreadful COVID pandemic, and Bill Gates repeated for the song’s duration.

Everything was going great. We had made it to the first song of the encore, “First of the Gang To Die,”  and Morrissey was still here! Then a gang of stage invaders – and by gang I mean exactly 4 people – rushed the stage. That was all it took. The stage bouncers rushed in to deal with that situation while someone else escorted Morrissey off stage. Even the backing band knew the drill, as they all put away their instruments and exited the stage.

Oh well, we almost made it! The show was fantastic and definitely worth taking the risk if you dare.
