Indie rockers, Whitehall, made a stop in Chicago on their fall 2023 headlining tour in support of their new single “Shadow of Your Wall” and their Enci Records label debut album Maizy, which dropped in May.
The quartet from Charleston, SC kicked off their tour in Columbus, OH before stopping in Chicago, IL for a show at Subterranean on September 15th. Whitehall is a returning band at Subterranean, except this time they were here performing as the headliner. The openers consisted of Cloud Houses and The Courts, which are both local to Chicago.
Whitehall performed a variety of their hit songs, ranging from “Mexico” off of 2022’s Garden Song EP to “Vacation Home,” a track from their 2018 debut album, Ocean Fiction. “Itinerant” was the perfect choice as the opening song, as it really got the crowd going in record time. “Cash” and “Vacation Home” were my personal favorites, and it seemed that the enthusiastic crowd agreed.
Whitehall really knows how to read the audience and introduce their songs in a way that raises the excitement level among both longtime followers as well as new fans. The way that they build the intensity in their music really energizes the crowd and they play with so much passion that it overflows into the throngs of dancing concertgoers. The crowd for their Chicago show contained a wide variety of music lovers, and at the end of the show Whitehall stuck around to meet their fans. They even gave one a signed setlist!
Overall, you can tell that the members of Whitehall have a special bond and enjoy being on stage together. They put on an impressive show that I will be reliving in my mind until I get the chance to see them again. The guys are on tour through November 19th, where they’ll wrap up the tour in Lakewood, OH at The Foundry.
