The Red Hot Chili Peppers slayed the sold-out crowd in attendance at Sunday night’s show at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX.
This was the last stop of their World Stadium Tour which began in June. The guys were all smiles throughout the show, particularly guitarist John Frusciante, who recently rejoined the Peppers after a 10-year absence.
Opening the night’s festivities was Thundercat, a funkadelic 3-piece led by the insanely talented singer/bassist Stephen Lee Bruner. A huge cartoon cat set piece was the backdrop for the delivery of their funky tunes.
Up next were The Strokes, who were barely visible due to their moody blue stage lighting, but the crowd went insane all the same. Opening with “Meet Me in the Bathroom” off of their second album Room on Fire, the band sounded tight and took us on a musical journey through their extensive catalog with an 11-song set that culminated with the crowd favorite “Hard to Explain.”
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, minus singer Anthony Kiedis, hit the stage to thunderous applause and cheers from the frenzied crowd. Bassist Flea and guitarist John Frusciante embarked on a mini jam session with beats held down by drummer Chad Smith. Kiedis bounced onstage to the opening notes of “Can’t Stop” off of their 2002 album By the Way.
The guys treated us to an 18-song set that pulled heavily from their more recent offerings, but still had enough of their earlier tunes sprinkled in to keep the die-hard older fans interested.
An enormous video screen served as their backdrop and added unique visuals that meshed perfectly with the rock they dished out.
And the end of the show, Kiedis thanked the crowd saying, “We will never forget this shit!” Judging from the roaring cheers in response, it’s not likely any of the 40,000 fans in attendance will either.
