On Saturday, September 28th, Canadian pop-punk legends Sum 41 brought their final Tour Of The Setting Sums to the HEB Center in Cedar Park outside of Austin, TX, for one last sendoff of this seminal band.

At the end of the night, the houselights went down and the stage was set for one last Austin appearance by the legendary Sum 41. As the curtain fell, the Canadian Pop Punk quintet was onstage jumping into the electrifying opening drum crashes to “Motivation”. For their final run, the show was well-equipped with risers, a walkout stage, smoke and confetti canons, and of course pyrotechnics.

A super-charged Sum 41 gave an incredibly vibrant farewell set, with representation from nearly every album. This was a celebration of the band’s 30-year history and a chance for Central Texas Rockers to jump in a mosh pit for songs like “Over My Head,” “No Reason,” and “Underclass Hero.”

There was no lull as the night hit every major hit they’ve ever had and even the new surprises from the recently released HeavenxHell kept the energy flowing. With all of this, the show was punctuated by meaningful moments when singer Deryck Whibley took time between songs to talk about the band’s history and the milestones they achieved together. Surprisingly for a Pop Punk band that has been marinated in Heavy Metal, moments like these were typically where the more soulful acoustic songs came into the mix. No less spirited, but heartfelt fan favorites like “Pieces” and “With Me” gave the audience a chance at massive sing-alongs.

One of these moments came during the introduction of the song “Walking Disaster,” where fans boo’d at the response to Sum 41 calling it quits, which took Whibley by surprise. “After 30 years, hasn’t the world had enough of us?” he asked. Clearly not.

At the end of the night the band returned for an encore and special commemoration of the song “Summertime.” Again Whibley explains it was the first (good) song the band ever wrote when they were still in school, and nurtured it till it would debut as the first hit on their debut album. Afterward, they introduced one more new song, “Waiting On A Twist Of Fate,” before closing out on “In Too Deep” as one last thank you to fans for making them giants of the genre.
