Trentemøller Shows Off Dark Electronic Soundscapes on Upcoming Album ‘Memoria’

Trentemøller Shows Us that Dreamy and Dark Electronic Soundscapes are His Forte on Upcoming Album ‘Memoria’

Trentemøller

Danish composer, musician and producer Trentemøller announces the release with his brand-new album Memoria, to be unleashed to audiences February 11, 2022 via his label, In My Room. Trentemøller gives us a first look into his new record and from front to back, the album is a representation of Trentemøller’s take on the shoegaze, noise rock and electronic pop genres. Filled with dreamy, somber and contemplative pieces, Trentemøller immediately reels you in with his ethereal electronic soundscapes packed full of evocative melodies and riffs. The sixth studio album is a balance between inspiration, coincidence and maybe a bit of the supernatural. All this converges for a very haunting and dreamy sound that will definitely be on the radar of every electronica and shoegaze fan out there.

Memoria begins with “Veil Of White.” Packed with moody synths, the music slowly grows and grows, and the inclusion of guitars and percussive beats give off an immediate sound. Drifting into this piece are Lisbet Fritze’s ethereal-sounding whispery vocals. The soft music buoys her quiet voice and the guitar riffs are a solid foundation underneath the ghostly vocals. Right away, the hazy and reverb-drenched music will hit audiences from the start on “No More Kissing In The Rain.” I was mesmerized by the dreamy swaths of instrumentals. Once Fritze’s ethereal vocals came in, I thought the uplifting waves of sounds was like a breath of fresh air, and  I was loving this direction towards a more joyous sound. Some monotonous beats sound out for a pared-down and minimalistic sound on “Darklands.” Percussive beats enter, drumming up the drama for this piece, and the synths sound out for an airy and spacious feel. I was reminded of The XX here. The swirls of music had a dark contemplative quality to it.

Guitars sound out providing a haunting display on the atmospheric “Glow.” Percolating beats add some traction to this track, while the ghostly strands of guitar and beats made for an arresting listen. More reverberating guitars come out of the ether, and the shooting rays of electronic riffs give off a glitch-y approach. The soundscape is wrapped up in surreal, hazy sounds alongside tribal beats. “In The Gloaming” is the first single released fromf this album. As syncopated beats arrive, pulsating against the waves of synths and Fritze’s beautiful vocals, I felt myself getting lost in the sea of atmospheric and ambient layers of sound. I can definitely see why Trentemøller chose this as one of his singles. The gorgeous multifaceted sound really spoke to me. “All Too Soon” the second single from Memoria, sees melodic guitars combined with beats bouncing around in the background. Fritze’s ghostly vocals entered and her execution was dead-on. I was immediately drawn to her ethereal voice. Like a moth to a flame, there was just something so gravitating about her singing style.

“Drifting Star,” sees some retro-styled synths come through, then the ethereal and dream-like music immediately kicks in as ghostly vocal harmonies eerily enter. There was a soaring vibe to the music as the sounds took flight, providing an invigorating listen. In “Like A Daydream,” Fritze’s surreal vocals paired with the other-worldly instrumentals made for an inviting listen. A wall of guitars produces a mesmerizing display of sounds on “Linger.” With tons of reverb and distortion, the sound just grows until it surrounds you. Trentemøller ends the album with another spell-binding instrumental.

Longtime collaborator Fritze lends her vocals on many of these tracks and it is her compelling ghostly lilt that will be among many of the things that will keep listeners coming back to these songs again and again. Her vocals, paired with the haunting and somber music, created a great contrast that had me comparing their sound to bands like Radiohead and Mogwai. Feeding into tons of ambiance and mood, these flavorful atmospheric electronic rock tracks will surround you with their immersive sonic landscapes.

Memoria shows us an artist owning up to his sound for a compelling listen from start to finish. This was another startling record from the artist that I’m sure will resonate with listeners once its official release a few months from now.
