On Friday, December 12th, San Antonio was the epicenter of Rock in Texas as Sevendust rolled into the Aztec Theatre for the finale of their acoustic tour with Cory Marks. The stage was set for the last night of the tour, bringing together legendary visionaries of Hard Rock and a Young Heatseeker to shake the River City off its feet!

Kicking off the night was Cory Marks, a Country singer from Ontario, determined to leave a lasting impact in the world of Rock. The tone was established from the start with the hit single, “(Make My) Country Rock,” which pulls triple-duty as a mission statement, genre descriptor, and a battle cry for Texas Rockers.
His set featured fist-pumping anthems such as “Blame It On The Double” as well as “Outlaws and Outsiders” in the acoustic format, of which the recorded version features Mick Mars, Travis Tritt, and members of both Theory Of A Deadman and Five Finger Death Punch.

On this stage he got to strip away the glam and present a solidly written Hard Rock song in its most purest form. Marks was personable and relatable all the way to his final send off for this American Tour with the title track of his last two albums, “Sorry For Nothing.”

The house lights came down once more, this time to bring up the almighty Sevendust to close the chapter on this tour. As the band strummed the first notes of “Black,” lead singer, Lajon Witherspoon invited the packed audience of the Aztec Theatre to rise to their feet and share the energy for this magical night.
Sevendust is a sleeper-favorite in the music scene, always somewhere in the discussion of current Hard Rock. Their typical live show is a fist-pumping extravaganza of familiar hits that fans have found cathartic release screaming pained choruses for years now. That said, seeing them in an acoustic setting was an interesting choice for them. Not only were they seated, despite inviting their fans to rise, guitarist Clint Lowery and bassist Vinnie Hornsby were playing electric instruments, making the enterprise feel more “stripped down” than acoustic.
More than hearing a core’d version of songs like “Denial “or “Bitch,” it was more exciting to revisit songs that don’t always pop up in the setlist, examined through new ears. Songs like “Follow,” “Beautiful,” or the absolutely mournful and haunting “Skeleton Song” were given the room to breathe and a showcase unlike any other we’ve seen before.

One song that felt poignant was the seasonally appropriate “Xmas Day.” If not for this type of setting with this time of year we would normally be unable to see a different side to Sevendust’s writing capacities or the full talents on display from guitarist Clint Lowery in a singing role. At the end of the set, Sevendust took it all to a close with the savage “Face To Face,” receiving one more standing ovation from the congregation of Texas Metalheads!
