Right after delivering a soul-searing performance at this year’s Milwaukee Metal Fest, Ricky Hoover, frontman of Ov Sulfur, took a moment to speak with Music Fiends. Still emanating the raw intensity of his set, Hoover gave us insight into the infernal force that is Ov Sulfur, a band dragging blackened deathcore straight from the abyss and into the ears of the damned.
Hailing from the scorched sands of Las Vegas, Ov Sulfur emerged in 2021 as a brutal answer to the call for darker, heavier, and more theologically defiant metal. Fronted by Ricky Hoover, known for his previous work with Suffokate, the band fuses black metal’s cold fury with deathcore’s crushing aggression, layering it all with grandiose symphonic elements and unapologetically anti-religious themes.
Their debut full-length, The Burden Ov Faith, dropped in 2023 under Century Media and slammed listeners with hellfire riffs, blast beats, and Hoover’s demonic growls. Lyrically, the band dives headfirst into themes of corruption, hypocrisy, and the spiritual rot of institutionalized faith, daring listeners to confront the shadows within themselves. With a lineup of seasoned musicians and an unrelenting live presence, Ov Sulfur isn’t just playing heavy music, they’re summoning it from the void.
Ov Sulfur continues to carve out their place in extreme metal with anthems for the disillusioned and the damned. Their message is clear: burn the idols, break the chains, and embrace the sulfur.
